Peppermint Oil for Hair Growth - Does It Work?

What is peppermint oil?

Peppermint oil is the source of an oil derived from the peppermint. Many oils in peppermint are stronger than others. Traditional distillation methods are used to make the strongest forms and are called essential oils.

The most common type of peppermint oil available for purchase is basic peppermint oil. It can be used for the purposes of nutrition, beauty and cleaning.

Peppermint contains a menthol compound. Menthol is responsible for many of peppermint oils ' advantages. Menthol also gives its taste, smell, and sense of cooling to peppermint.

Why use peppermint oil on your hair?

As part of their skin and hair care routine, some people use peppermint oil. The fragrance in shampoos, skin creams and other items is nice and popular.

While peppermint oil may be known for some benefits to skin care, it is also good for your hair and scalp. It can help with dryness, scratching, or other issues with the scalp.
The potential benefits of peppermint essential oil can be defined as:
  • antimicrobial
  • insecticidal and pesticidal
  • analgesic and anesthetic
  • vasodilating (and vasoconstricting)
  • anti-inflammatory
Several have used the oil as a hair loss treatment. This may be because a vasodilator is the menthol in the essential oil of peppermint, and vasodilators improve blood flow. Hair loss happens in many cases (such as in baldness of the female or male pattern) due to hungry blood flow to hair follicles. Increasing circulation with a peppermint-like vasodilator may potentially improve hair growth and prevent hair loss.

Peppermint menthol also gives the skin and scalp a fresh smell and tingly feeling. Through applying essential oil to your beauty products, you will reap these benefits.

Do studies support its use for hair loss?

Essential oils have been used in several parts of the world to stimulate hair growth for thousands of years. Nevertheless, there is generally a recent use of peppermint to improve hair growth. It has not been backed up by long-standing conventional proof, nor has it been researched in depth. Peppermint essential oils have been widely available to the public only over the past few decades.
That said, a recent 2014 mice study showed that essential oils from peppermint could hold a lot of hair growth promise. Researchers noticed faster and thicker hair growth and increased blood flow to undernourished hair follicles. The research opens a door to investigate the advantages of essential peppermint oil for the growth of human hair.
Other studies (one in 2011 and one in 2013) have shown, however, that peppermint essential oil menthol encourages vasoconstriction rather than vasodilation. But this vasoconstriction tends to occur only when, for example during exercise, the skin or muscle region where oil is applied is inflamed.

In order to better understand the effects of peppermint oil on hair growth, more research is needed.

How do you treat hair loss with peppermint oil?

There are a few ways to try to avoid hair loss by using peppermint oil on your hair.

One is a direct rubbing of the scalp. Apply about one tablespoon of your preferred scalp massage oil with a few drops of blood. You can use a simple household oil such as coconut, jojoba, or shea butter oil if you don't have scalp massage oil.

Massage your scalp with the oil. You can experience a sense of tingling, minty. Quit the treatment and wash your hair with shampoo for 15 to 20 minutes. If you get too strong the sensation of menthol, add other oils to balance the effect or instantly clean your scalp with shampoo.
You can also fill your shampoo and conditioner bottles with peppermint oil. Avoid adding too much. It is recommended to take about five drops per ounce of shampoo or conditioner. Just use your shampoo and conditioner with the essential oil of peppermint as you would normally, and enjoy the advantages.

Note that peppermint-scented products will not achieve the same results. Perhaps these products do not contain essential oil. The essential oils in peppermint are extracted to contain the highest possible amounts of menthol. Most other products do not have enough menthol to have therapeutic benefit.
